The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, or PolyU for short, is a public comprehensive research university located in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China and a leading institution of higher learning in Asia. The history of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University dates back to the establishment of the Hong Kong Government's School of Advanced Industrial Studies in 1937, which was officially renamed The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1994 and granted self-assessment status by the Government. In the 2017-2018 QS World University Rankings, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is ranked 95th in the world and 5th in Hong Kong, and is ranked 6th among the world's 50 best universities with less than 50 years of history. In the 2017-2018 QS Asia University Rankings, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University was ranked 27th in Asia. In the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2018, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is ranked 19th in Asia. According to the 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject, Hong Kong Polytechnic University is ranked 3rd in the world for Hospitality Management, 10th in the world for Civil and Structural Engineering, 15th in the world for Architecture and Environment, 27th in the world for Art and Design, 30th and 34th in Nursing and Linguistics respectively, 40th in the world for Business and Management Studies, and 64th in the world for Statistics and Organization Studies.

3. Research funding and research institutions

In 2016-2017, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University had a total of 5,628 research outputs and received a total research grant of HK$733 million. Among them, the University Grants Committee UGC allocated HK$292 million and the Research Grants Council allocated HK$75.4 million to the Research Grants Council.

During the year, the University received a total of 90 patent applications and 43 patent inventions. The University has well-established research facilities, including two Hong Kong branches of the National Engineering and Technology Research Centre, two Hong Kong collaborating laboratories of the State Key Laboratory, one research institute, six research center laboratories and 32 research centers.
